When design-build makes sense
If your project involves more than one trade — say, a paver patio, an outdoor kitchen, and new planting around it — a design-build team removes the coordination burden. We schedule the sequence (grading before pavers, rough-ins before the kitchen structure, planting after hardscape) so nothing gets built out of order.
It also means the finished result matches what was designed, because the people building it are the people who drew it.
When piecing it together yourself can work
For a single, contained task — mowing, a small repair, one irrigation zone fix — hiring a specialist directly can be simpler and sometimes cheaper than routing it through a design-build contract.
The tradeoff shows up on larger, multi-trade projects, where sequencing and design handoffs between separate contractors become the homeowner's responsibility.
